Lots of sites used to have fanfic awards.
Most of the time a site only awarded fics that were posted on the site, to encourage people to post or submit fanfiction to the site. Occasionally, sites had no fanfic on their site and they would award fanfic they liked that was posted on any site. Some site admins selected the fanfic winners, and other sites let their members nominate fanfics and vote for the winners. The awards started out fairly basic, with categories such as best fanfic, best max/liz fanfic, best michael/maria fanfic. But sites soon started adding more and more categories. Some of this was due to fans complaining that the same people were winning all the awards. Mostly it was AU fanfic that was winning. So sites added categories to try to include more and different kinds of fanfic, such as best canon fics, best dupes fic, best UC fic, best minor character, best sad fic, etc. Originally most sites just had a list of winners, but it quickly became common to award winners and sometimes runners-up with a banner they could post with their fanfic. Below are some of the award winner banners I saved.
Fansites that set up voting for fanfic awards often had banners they used banners on the site to remind the members to vote, and sometimes had banners for the nominated authors to post in their stories as well. Here are a few voting reminder banners. Coming Soon.
