Character Birthdays, Ages, & Early Schooling
People have been asking about character ages and why they seem to be all over the place in school
together, so I thought I set up this quick reference. I know it nearly drove me crazy trying to get
all the dates to match up - lol - but I think I've finally gotten it all worked out - whew.
This sections gives the info we know about the birthdays, ages, and schooling of the main characters -
Max, Michael, Isabel, Alex, Maria, Kyle and Tess before we see them in the show.
In the Pilot, it is Sept of 1999, and Max, Michael, Isabel, Alex, Maria and Kyle in the
Sophmore class at West Roswell High School. But what about before then?
Below, I am listing what we know for sure, and some specualtion based on info from the show

Ages
Here are the known birthdays for the characters
According to the New Mexico Public School website, a child must turn 5 by midnight of August 31st to enroll in kindergarten. If they turn 5 after that date, they must wait to start school until the next year. Michael Michael is still a minor in Jan or early Feb of 2002 (IMAA), meaning he will turn 18 in 2002, so his assigned birthdate must be in 1984 before the end of August. You can barely see Michael's driver's licence in the episode '285S', and it seems to list his birthday as June 11, 1984. Whoo Hoo! That fits with what I figured out! Maria Maria's exact birthdate is not given, but in the epi 'Disturbing Behavior', which takes place in the first part of Feb 2001, she is 17. In the epi 'I Married an Alien', which is in Jan or early Feb of 2002, she is turning 18 'next week'. So her birthday must be Jan or early Feb of 1984. Liz's birthdate is a bit more complicated - Her birthdate is never mentioned, but through a series of deductions made while I was researching dates, I think this is probably correct. Take a deep breath, it is bumpy ride! Future Max mentions that Liz is seventeen in EOTW, which is set in late November of 2000. From that we can figure that she was born in 1983. So she turned 17 before the end of Nov 2000, and Liz is still seventeen in season 3 'Busted' when she is on trial. No exact date is given for the episode, but it takes place sometime after school started in Aug of 2001. In New Mexico, anyone who is 5 years old after Aug 31st must wait an extra year to start school, and that seems to be what Liz had to do. She was born in 1983, and Alex, Maria and Kyle were all born in 1984 but they are in the same grade. This makes me think that Liz must have been born in Sept or later and waited a year to go to school. So her birthday has to be between Sept and Nov of 1983. |

Schools
We never find out the names of any of the other schools the kids attended, and we aren't sure they all went to school together in the same schools for all those early years. It is probable there are several elementary and junior high schools in the area, so they could have gone to completely different schools. We know Max, Isabel, Liz, Michael, Kyle, Alex and Maria are in the same grade. So the birthdates seem to be correct for Michael and the humans. Liz started school a year late, as she should for her birthdate. Max is a year behind, and Isabel is also a year behind (her birthday is after Aug 31st or she would be two years behind), but that is understandable for how they were found. According to Tess' birthdate, she should either be a grade ahead of the others, or else she was held back too. As far as I know, it is never mentioned what grade she is in. Before she came to Roswell, Tess previous school was in her transcripts as being in Chicago, IL.
