Season 3 was Complete Crap

A few people have asked why I hate season 3 so much, so here is the explanation.

Actually, if it were up to me, I'd scrap everything after season 2 'A Roswell Christmas Carol'.
I could live with sea2 if sea3 went a completely different way. That's why I wrote 'Alpha & Omega'

But season 3 . . . (shakes head)

Season 3 was just so different than the other seasons, it wasn't the show I loved. To me it seemed to be almost a parody of Roswell with all the silly story lines. It was certainly turned into more of a soap opera than a sci-fi show. They ruined anything that was special about the show and didn't even try to recapture any of it.

The whole reason why dreamers loved the show of course is because of the magical relationship between Max and Liz. They were special, different, fated to love each other even though they were from different worlds.

The end of season 2 completely ruined that when Max slept with Tess, but some of us stuck in there, really hoping it would turn out not to be true. We knew that Max loved Liz and he would never just hop into bed with the first available girl. For all he cared about Tess, it could have been some random chick he met at the mall. The Max we knew wasn't like that.

Sure, he had reasons to do it, maybe we could even understand that a regular guy could sleep with Tess, but Max wasn't a regular guy. He should have kept his faith in Liz, he should have saved himself. The Max we knew and loved would have saved himself. The Max we knew and loved wouldn't have thrown away his virginity to someone he didn't love.

With that stupid act, Max and Liz's relationship was reduced to ordinary, or worse. He was just another cheating jerk in a soap opera.

And even worse than that, the show made it look like Max was just waiting to try things out with Tess. He certainly kissed her quickly enough after he and Liz called it quits at the prom. He was gutted a minute before to finally think it was over with Liz, but that didn't stop him from making out with Tess. How is that romantic for anyone?

It was like he said, "Well, Liz is out of the picture, so I guess I'll follow my destiny." The Max we knew and loved would never have done that. Max wasn't interested in Tess. He didn't think about her like that at all, but suddenly he is making out with her and sleeping with her.

I can't even imagine that any Rebels were really happy about how Max and Tess got together. Tess turned out to be a substitute for who Max really wanted. She was just a way to scratch his itch. He certainly never said he loved her, even when he found out she was pregnant.

And the fact that a child was created made things even worse. Max would have to choose his son over Liz at some point, he'd be a bastard if he didn't, but how is that romantic? It just made Max seem like a bigger ass because he was going to leave Earth to get his son without telling Liz anything about it.

Apparently TPTB didn't realize any of this, or they didn't care. They probably thought that Max and Liz needed to be tested so they could work their way back to each other, but really, they never showed that at all.

And the dumbest thing of all is that storyline of Max and Tess and the baby didn't go anywhere. It didn't lead to anything or affect anything in their world. The baby didn't grow up to be Khivar, or a great leader who saved their planet, or the key to stopping the end of the world, something, anything to justify why they felt it was necessary to go in that direction in the first place. Just another hanging plot.

So there was really no purpose in ruining the relationship that was supported by the vast majority of the fans, and killing the magic of the show, other than really pissing us off.

After Max's idiotic decision to sleep with Tess, some of the fans started to call Max the irredeemable ass, and as season 3 progressed, it seemed more and more impossible that he could be redeemed, and in the eyes of most dreamers, he never was.

By the end of season 2 TBTP had not only destroyed Max and Liz, but they'd destroyed practically everything that the show once was, and pissed off most of the fans in the process. The dreamers were mad about Max and Liz, and Max and Tess, and the baby, the Gazers and Donors were angry that Alex was dead, Tess' fans were angry that she was the bad guy and Max rejected her. Only the Candies were happy. But that didn't last long, because season 3 ruined that too.

It's no wonder there was a huge loss of viewers going into season 3. Some of us stuck in there, hoping they would do something to fix the mess, but we were disappointed.

None of the stories in season 3 went anywhere, none of them were developed, nothing was allowed to build. The characters were completely different, and they weren't the people I fell in love with. I didn't much like any of them in s3. Instead of having character development they just tore them down.

Liz was a doormat and stupid, Max was a complete ass and stupid, Max didn't deserve Liz and I really didn't care if they got together or not (and I am a huge dreamer!), Maria was a skank and threw away her relationship with Michael (who stayed on Earth for her), Michael was boring and stupid and a bit of a doormat too, Isabel didn't mourn for Alex (who she claimed to love) and married on the rebound and then lied to him about everything, Jesse was more of a prop that a character, Valenti was a cradle robber and boring, Mr. Parker was suddenly a controlling a-hole, Mr Evans was a suspicious jerk. I mean, could they have destroyed the characters any more?

I also thought the storylines were just wasted. Instead of continuing anything from s1 or 2, (the alien's past or any of the other 1001 unanswered questions) or using any of the truly intriguing spoilers or trying to recapture the magic of season 1, instead they brought in a bunch of new stuff that was absolute crap; Max's search for his son at the cost of everything else (yawn - 3 wasted episodes), Metachem (wtf? - 3 more wasted episodes), Isabel and Jesse's relationship (yawn - the whole season wasted), the reporter (give me a break. could Michael be any more stupid? - another wasted episode), the autistic boy (had nothing what-so-ever to do with anything Roswell - another wasted episode), Max's death and reincarnation into Clayton Wheeler (the most ridiculous thing ever - 3 more wasted episodes), Michael becoming king (possibly even more stupid than Max dying), Kyle's crush on Isabel (never went anywhere), Tess coming back (who cared at that point? - more wasted episodes). And the sad thing was that NONE of the stories went anywhere, and none of them developed the characters or moved the show forward.

The only storylines that kind of interested me were Khivar, and Liz's powers, but they didn't develop them AT ALL, and just threw them away. Even the return of the Special Unit could have gone somewhere, but it was all just too little too late.

Yeah, you could make the same type of argument for the last half of season 2, but even then things were happening (even if we HATED Alex dying and Max sleeping with Tess), and the show was moving toward something. And we expected to be given answers about why everything changed so quickly and what exactly was going on, though it never happened. In season 3 I really had no expectations of any explanations - and unfortunately I was right. I expected the worst, and it got even worse that that.

I remember watching the season 3 episodes as they aired, and being disappointed week after week. Instead of looking forward to the show as I did in season 1 & 2, I dreaded each upcoming episode in season 3, wondering how they would ruin the show even more. By the middle of the season, I was hoping they would cancel the show and put us out of our misery.

There were so many possibilities, so many things they could have done, it was just a huge waste and disappointment. I hated the way season 3 started, and hated the way it ended, and didn't like much in between.

I know some people like season 3, and that is great. At least it wasn't a complete waste of time that they made it.

One time watching s3 was plenty for me, and I actually do wish it never existed. Easier that way to pretend it happened the way I would have liked. I really think of s3 as just another bad fanfic I read. lol

Okay, that is my rant, now back to the Roswell season 1 & 2 lovin'!

Small update to this topic.

I attended the 2014 Salt Lake Comic Con and got to talk to Jonathan Frakes briefly.

He said that looking back, getting Tess and Max together was a huge mistake, and it really led to the downfall of the show.
